Internet safety has become one of the Rights of a Child in this digital age.
Growing kids have a great need for the internet. Just a few years ago, today’s adults used dictionaries, encyclopedia, textbooks, videos, documentaries and lecture notes to source for information. Currently, the story is different, the internet is a ‘one-stop’ source of nearly all information, globally. It serves the role of all the previous means of knowledge transfer and it does so in the most appealing way.
The internet is very convenient to kids because it appeals to their inquisitive mind. It is a ready source of information for their homework. It is also a meeting place with friends and family. It offers youths the opportunity of living in one part of the world and feeling another part of the world simultaneously. By means of the internet- the terrain, culture, cuisine, attire and wildlife descriptions of a geographically far region is brought nearer.
the internet is like a sharp knife, whilst it can be put into good use to peel fruits, slice veggies etc; it can also cause injuries if used with less than adequate caution.
Some dangers that internet can pose to kids:
- Mismanagement of time – This is often common when surfing the internet endlessly and chatting with friends. When they spend a lot of time on the internet, they get addicted, their behavior change for the worse and school performance drops.
- Cyberbullying – Kids can be intimidated, threatened, harassed by strangers online.
- Sexual predation – Child molesters are on the loose, looking for unsuspecting young lads to lure into their bait.
